Coloniae [Köln]: apud Adamum Cholinum, 1730; 4°.

Format: Quarto. 31 Blatt, 346 Seiten, 7 pages instead of 8. (The pages with the Errata is missing. With 10 instead of (11?) plates showing portraits and heralds.

Binding: contemporary half leather binding in a stained condition.

Very nice, unsophisticated copy from the private collections of M. Favia del Core (bookplate on the front pastedown) and Friedlaender.

The volume includes, here bound together, two incunabula: the Cosmographia by Pomponio Mela, which is the earliest extant geographic treatise in Classical Latin, and the well-known De situ orbis by Dionysus Periegetes in the Latin version by Antonio Beccaria of Verona. Both texts are reference works of classical geography.

Jan Fryderyk Sapieha (1680-1751) was one of the most famous contemporary public figures of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Referendary of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (1707–1709), Castellan of Trakai (from 1716), Marshal of the Grand Tribunal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (from 1729), and Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (from 1735). For his services to the State, he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle. He wrote several works in Latin and Polish. His most important historical work, Historical Notes on the Origin, Antiquity, and Nobility of the Heroic and Most Celebrated Polish Order of the White Eagle, discusses the very first Order established in the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was established by the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Augustus II, to whom the book is dedicated.
