Priests Tadas Juzumas (1810–1851) and Jeronimas Kiprijonas Račkauskis (1825–1889) composed and published the prayer book Old Golden Altar, or a Collection of Various Prayers and Songs in 1848 in Vilnius. It was one of the most popular prayer books in Lithuanian, with 33 repeated editions. In 1866, an official edition of the Lithuanian prayer book was published in Vilnius in the Cyrillic script (grazhdanka). The script was introduced in Lithuania in 1864, when the Russian government banned Lithuanian press in Latin script. The prayer book was published in the Rommas’ printing house, which operated in Vilnius in 1799-1940. It was one of the largest printing houses in Lithuania. It printed and published religious, scientific, ethnological books and periodicals in Yiddish, Polish, Latin, Russian, English, and other languages. In 1830–1864, it published 20 Lithuanian books; in 1865–18663, it published three Lithuanian books in Cyrillic.
