The priest, folklorist, and ethnographer Antanas Juška (1819–1880) collected around 7,000 folk songs and around 2,000 melodies. He prepared folklore collections and a Lithuanian-Polish dictionary with his brother Jonas Juška (1815–1886). After Antanas’ death, the works were edited and published by his brother Jonas. Antanas Juška’s folklore collection Lithuanian Wedding Songs is composed of 1,100 songs that were collected in 1865–1870 in the region of Veliuona. The Russian Tsar allowed publishing academic Lithuanian books in Latin script, so Lithuanian Wedding Songs was legally published in the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences Printing House. The publication was financed by Jonas Juška.
