The author of the painting is an unknown, self taught Lithuanian artist, who worked during the first half of the 19th century. His works have a simple drawing style, dark colouring with faces in Realist style, and soft patterns of the folds. The work depicts a rare scene in Lithuanian art, showing Saint Roch lying in his sickbed, with a guardian angel holding a cross in the background of heavy brown clouds. The work was probably created for a provincial monastery or a church. It is a meaningful reflection on the traits of plastic expression of the period.
