Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius came from a rich bayor family in Kaunas and completed his studies in Vilnius University. Working as a professor in the university, he wrote “Lietuvos istorija” (“The History of Lithuania”), which was based on Strijkovskis’ chronicles, but rewritten in accordance with “literary requirements” and Kojalavičius’ own views. Kojalavičius’ history was written in Latin, in a style commonly associated with the humanist period, but his views on the state and the role of Christianity in Lithuania were typical to the mid. 17th century. The historian, who dedicated both volumes of “Lietuvos istorija” (published in 1650 and 1669) to the men of the Sapiega family, wrote in the second dedication to Kazimieras Jonas Sapiega that the name of Sapiega “has always been… akin to a shield, protecting the Fatherland”. This demonstrates the enormous power that the Sapiega family held and the influence it had on the internal and foreign policy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Kojalavičius’ book was the only work (both in the 17th and 18th century) that tried to examine the feudal history of the state, explore one of the forms of a nation’s existence, and evaluate the most important events of the state: the war with the Teutonic Order, the Union of Lublin, and the like.
